New and Improved Comment Tracking

June 22, 2011 by Mark Linsenmayer 12 Comments

Forum signHey, there, blog readers,

I know you're there; I've seen the site stats. Yet many of you likely don't look at the reader comments on our posts or consider adding one (unless we say something really dumb). You might be surprised that the blog has evolved to be a right spiffy forum, with a dozen or so regular commenters and many more that pop in and out (this leaving aside our ever-growing Facebook Group, which has a mostly different crop of commenters).

However, we've had the problem in the past that new blog postings immediately push down the existing discussions out of the sight of new readers, and comments on old topics or episodes tend not to get noticed by anyone except us podcasters.

Well, now you'll see in the right-hand margin of our web page a string of hyperlinks to the most recently posted comments. Better than that, the "Forum" tab just below the site title now links to a more sprawling list of recent comments that will key you into all the active, recent discussions. Check it out and raise the level of the discussion! Contribute to your fellow listeners'/readers' (and our) understanding of these difficult yet amusing issues! Use exclamation points if you like! OR SHOUT!

Best,

-Mark Linsenmayer

Whenever I hear the word phenomenon (yes I know about Grandmaster Flash\ Duran Duran but I grew up with this)

SHOUTING IS TYPING LIKE THIS. I THINK NIETZSCHE WOULD DEFINITELY BE WRITING THINGS ON THE INTERNET LIKE THIS RIPPING ON MUSIC THAT HE THOUGHT SUCKED.

    Mark

I appreciate your open listening and action on my concerns. This bodes well for PEL and signals a strong, healthy website with staying power. Lesser web administrators would have hit the ‘delete comment(er) key’ on me, especially since I make scarce use of emotion icons 😀

My admonition against degrading PEL into just another political and/or religious blograg where bloggers and their fans come to opine on contentious current news stories still stands. The legions of competitors already providing this service will wipe you out.

Wes, I will look forward to the New Atheist episode but that will be like shooting fish in a barrel for you guys (i.e. I see little philosophical sophistication in the work of the popular new atheists). What I would really like to hear in a future episode is you guys discussing the work of professional atheist philosophers such as Graham Oppy, Stephen Maitzen, Stephen Law and Matt McCormick. For example, Law has a forthcoming paper to be published in Analysis entitled “Naturalism, Evolution and True Belief” in which he demolishes Alvin Plantinga’s Evolutionary Argument against Naturalism. Another topic that I bet would have wide appeal would be an analysis of David Benatar’s “Better Never to Have Been”. I’ll order that one for you as a fan gift if you email me the delivery address to: theatheistmissionary@gmail.com

The sad truth is that I’m not that bright and I really enjoy listening to you smart guys. TAM.

Thanks — I’ll check them out! And I’ll send you my delivery address for that book — thanks very much.

About The Partially Examined Life

The Partially Examined Life is a philosophy podcast by some guys who were at one point set on doing philosophy for a living but then thought better of it. Each episode, we pick a text and chat about it with some balance between insight and flippancy. You don’t have to know any philosophy, or even to have read the text we’re talking about to (mostly) follow and (hopefully) enjoy the discussion

Become a PEL Citizen!

As a PEL Citizen, you’ll have access to a private social community of philosophers, thinkers, and other partial examiners where you can join or initiate discussion groups dedicated to particular readings, participate in lively forums, arrange online meet-ups for impromptu seminars, and more. PEL Citizens also have free access to podcast transcripts, guided readings, episode guides, PEL music, and other citizen-exclusive material. Click here to join.
