Introducing Our Topics-by-Category Page

October 17, 2011 by Mark Linsenmayer 9 Comments

We've completed a new Podcast Topics page that lays out our progress and prospects in the various philosophic streams: how are we doing on ethics? (great!), in metaphysics (spotty), in philosophy of science (uh... what?), etc.

If you're newish to PEL and/or haven't had the stomach to go back and listen to every episode chronologically, this page will help you key in on other episodes related to the one you just listened to and enjoyed. If you just tuned in for the new atheists, for instance, you're missing a key part of the discussion: our Schleiermacher episode. And who can keep track of all those pesky social contract episodes?

I'll doubtless be revising this continually; let me know if it's helpful.

Check out the page

On a somewhat related note, what’s next in line as far as topics go?

With the OWS movement and never-ending economic debates, some parsing of Keynes, Hayek or Von M. would be extremely interesting.

Plus, I’m still looking forward to that episode on Marx and 3d printers.

We were supposed to record Sartre last Sunday but not everyone was ready, so that’s getting pushed forward a couple of weeks; we’d already had one on the Euthyphro lined up for next Sunday (with a Plato scholar guest) and plan to proceed on that.

I’ve resolved not to say anything definite about future topics, really until the thing is actually recorded, as too many things keep sliding around with people’s availability. Marx is a high priority, but Wealth of Nations will likely come first.

May I say: this is very helpful! Having joined the discussion late, I’m trying to keep my listening organized by following a topic, once presented, through to its’ completion, or to all related philosophical dialogues. Having an insanely busy ‘day job’ in the field of educational consulting, with deadlines looming and legal protocols to be met, being able to learn about these most important thinkers of the ages, and their philosophies, in this truly relaxing way is just lovely.
    Thank you. Joan

Thanks Joan! Glad you are enjoying this and let us know how your approach to the podcasts work. We are always discussing whether/how people should listen since we try to make each episode stand on its own but also struggle not to refer to previous episodes we’ve recorded.

Also, this forum and out Facebook page are great resources to get feedback if you have questions or interests you want to share.
      Cheers,

Thanks for your response, Seth. I will. I don’t do FB anymore; found it tedious, and, well, kinda sad, actually. But interactive dialogue could bring me back!

Yes, well, I wouldn’t rejoin on our account if that was your experience – I do completely understand though I have found a way to make it a useful part of my life. We are also looking to redesign our site to make things more organized and easier to find. We’ll see how that turns out…
      Cheers,

Although I understand having the FB account–sheesh, there are a billion people on FB–but it would be great to have an interactive discussion here.

About The Partially Examined Life

The Partially Examined Life is a philosophy podcast by some guys who were at one point set on doing philosophy for a living but then thought better of it. Each episode, we pick a text and chat about it with some balance between insight and flippancy. You don’t have to know any philosophy, or even to have read the text we’re talking about to (mostly) follow and (hopefully) enjoy the discussion

Become a PEL Citizen!

As a PEL Citizen, you’ll have access to a private social community of philosophers, thinkers, and other partial examiners where you can join or initiate discussion groups dedicated to particular readings, participate in lively forums, arrange online meet-ups for impromptu seminars, and more. PEL Citizens also have free access to podcast transcripts, guided readings, episode guides, PEL music, and other citizen-exclusive material. Click here to join.
