I hope this doesn’t signal you not doing more of these Mark….
I’ll do more eventually. Whether one on Merleau-Ponty happens right away is still TBD. I’ve definitely not sold enough of these to recoup my time, though I greatly appreciate those of you that have been interested.
I have no idea if this feedback is useful to you, or is just annoying. I considered purchasing the close reading product, but was put off by the low price. I’d be very interested in a ‘Here’s a guided close reading of the entire text’ for $10-20; I’m not at all interested in a few pages for $2.
In general, since I’m inclined to value something the more dearly it’s priced, I’d like to see a higher price point.
Interesting. I appreciate the reaction.
A point I should emphasize: this is not an audiobook; it’s more like 1/2 hour of tutoring. It’s not uncommon in philosophy classes at the graduate level, for very hard books, to walk through them as a group doing exactly this kind of close reading, and unless you’re going to spend a semester on one book (not unheard of), then typically you just do it with a chapter or even less, as unlocking the secrets of that portion then makes the book more accessible.
There are also legal (fair use considerations for copyrighted texts) and practical (I can’t afford to spend days and days on these unless I’m selling a lot of them) reasons for packaging this way. My reason for lowering the price now is not out of despair in selling enough, but just because I’m trying to find the right price point. Should these catch on, I’d certainly risk recording, say, 2 hrs of footage instead of half an hour and charging correspondingly more for it.
