Behold our Web Redesign

June 26, 2012 by Mark Linsenmayer 5 Comments

Genevieve's fan art
Genevieve's unsolicited fan art based on comments made during our Sartre episode, by which she got our attention so we could ask her to help us with this web redesign.
As you may have noticed, we've got a nifty new web redesign here that we've just deployed. Behold our new features:

-New art from Genevieve Arnold (thanks!), a fan/volunteer who took Ken Gerber's original PEL guy icon and 3-man-caricature to create our new header, a cool philosophy vending machine picture, and a recolored caricature with Dylan in it. Yes, the picture above is her early quick swipe at Dylan as a Nietzsche-mustached mechanical owl.

-We also took brand new photos of ourselves so you can see what we actually look like.

-We can now feature blog posts on the front page. We'll be using this to encourage continued discussion on older threads relevant to our current thinking.

-To view the blog the way you're used to, without the featured links or the current episode taking up space at the top and the posts stretching across more horizontal space, you can bookmark the blog page instead of the home page.

-We've implemented a "related posts" sidebar on individual blog posts, which should hopefully help you figure out, e.g. what episodes to listen to in conjunction with the one you're looking at to get the whole story, or what other blog posts contributed to the conversation you're currently reading a part of. This list is automated, though, so you can expect some false positives and missing posts. If you really want a full list, use the newly-obvious search box in the header menu stripe.

-We've explained our post categories and created a new display where you can see the most recent blog posts in each category.

-Why, we've got pictures of all your favorite philosophers (that we've gotten around to covering). What a parade of white guys! (And cartoon depictions of the Asians in our list!) Coming up with an authentic photo of God was a bit tricky. Genevieve was also nice enough to draw G.E. Moore for us.

As stated on the recent episode, a lot of the configuration work on this by Dylan Casey, so we're extra glad to have him involved. Also providing crucial support was Whoopee Cushion record holder Josh Casey, who clued found us this new theme and did a lot of work to kick off this redesign, and Brian Casey, proprietor of rootlevelservices.com, who also donates server space for this site and my heaps of music files. (Yes, they're all brothers, and my wife is their sister.) Wes and Seth and I got our 2 cents in there too, of course.

Thanks for visiting, and we hope you subscribe to our daily blog email so you won't miss anything.

I’m happy to see a brother (W.E.B. Du Bios) among the parade of white guys! Love the new design!

Great design Mark! And the pictures of you guys look wonderful but why does Seth look like he’s about to go hunt down a wild boar?

I don’t get that vibe, but I am concerned about the size of my eyebrows.

About The Partially Examined Life

The Partially Examined Life is a philosophy podcast by some guys who were at one point set on doing philosophy for a living but then thought better of it. Each episode, we pick a text and chat about it with some balance between insight and flippancy. You don’t have to know any philosophy, or even to have read the text we’re talking about to (mostly) follow and (hopefully) enjoy the discussion

Become a PEL Citizen!

As a PEL Citizen, you’ll have access to a private social community of philosophers, thinkers, and other partial examiners where you can join or initiate discussion groups dedicated to particular readings, participate in lively forums, arrange online meet-ups for impromptu seminars, and more. PEL Citizens also have free access to podcast transcripts, guided readings, episode guides, PEL music, and other citizen-exclusive material. Click here to join.
