Yet more on The Confessions (400 CE), this time on books 10–13.
What is memory and how does it relate to time and being? Augustine thinks that memory is a storehouse, but it contains not just the sensations we put in it, but also (à la Plato's theory of recollection) really all legitimate knowledge. It's our route to God, to real Being. Mark, Wes, and Dylan also discuss time, language, knowledge, the existence of evil, and more.
This continues our discussion from ep.

I have only recently found your podcast and as an armchair philosopher I have to say thank you. In particular, your episodes on Augustine were sincere, honest, deep, and somewhat hilarious. As someone who tread a similar path as Augustine (as opposed to Manichaeism I went from existentialism to absurd theater to the absentee landlord theory then to Catholicism), I have to say that your treatment of this text was professional, intelligent and spot on. You got Augustine better than many of us Catholics do. Your non polemic, witty, humor is a breath of fresh air in a world of nonstop rhetoric and “agree with me or you’re evil” commentary. The vibe I get from you guys is “I could care less if you agree with me, but let’s discuss it and we’ll all be better in the end.” We need more of that. Well done gents. I’ll be listening!
Thanks Chris!
