"What connexion can there have been between many people in the innumerable histories of this world, who, from opposite sides of great gulfs, have, nevertheless, been very curiously brought together!”

- Bleak House

At over 900 pages, 300,000 words, and nearly 50 characters, Charles Dickens’ Bleak House is less a novel and more a temporary hobby. Set in a foggy, dirty London in the mid-1800’s, Bleak House centers around Jarndyce v Jarndyce, a case in the High Court of Chancery that has “become so complicated that no man alive knows what it means.” Throughout this convoluted story, Dickens weaves together plots and characters from every stratum of the social fabric––from the parasitic Smallweed to Skimpole the mooch to the angelic Esther, Dickens creates unforgettable characters that provide discussion and debate still relevant more than 150 years later.

“[H]e is a confoundedly bad kind of man. He is a slow-torturing kind of man. He is no more like flesh and blood than a rusty old carbine is. He is a kind of man―by George!―that has caused more restlessness, and more uneasiness, and more dissatisfaction with myself than all other men put together. That's the kind of man Mr. Tulkinghorn is!”

-Bleak House

Join us as Jennifer, Daniel and Laura debate the vices and virtues of these characters and even Dickens himself!

About The Partially Examined Life

The Partially Examined Life is a philosophy podcast by some guys who were at one point set on doing philosophy for a living but then thought better of it. Each episode, we pick a text and chat about it with some balance between insight and flippancy. You don’t have to know any philosophy, or even to have read the text we’re talking about to (mostly) follow and (hopefully) enjoy the discussion

Become a PEL Citizen!

As a PEL Citizen, you’ll have access to a private social community of philosophers, thinkers, and other partial examiners where you can join or initiate discussion groups dedicated to particular readings, participate in lively forums, arrange online meet-ups for impromptu seminars, and more. PEL Citizens also have free access to podcast transcripts, guided readings, episode guides, PEL music, and other citizen-exclusive material. Click here to join.
