Mark, Wes, and Dylan explore the question, “Is it necessary for us to have representatives of an affected group with us as guests when we talk about an issue in philosophy that affects that group?” This specifically grew out of our abortion episode, for which we planned to have a female guest, but that fell through, and we (without hesitation) recorded it anyway.
In the full discussion, we get into the wider issues of representation in philosophy and in the culture in general.
Thank you for having this conversation so robustly. I flip-flopped entirely across each speaker’s viewpoint.
Personally, I think the thing an identity can bring to a discussion is a nuanced understanding of emphasis.
But I do agree that if, say, what you’re discussing is a women’s issue… you’re probably using women’s thinkers and it’s THEIR that ideas that are the topic, not the panelist’s views.
