Pretty Much Pop #175: Podcast of the Planet of the Apes

We discuss the ten films that all started with the 1968 Charlton Heston vehicle (based on Pierre Boulle’s 1963 novel) through the latest offering, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. What psychologically are these films about, and has their mission statement changed over time, for instance from fear of displacement by savages in the original to just fun fantasy adventures with ape protagonists with the new film?

Which parts of this sprawling franchise are worth your time? It depends how much you enjoy cheesy old films. Despite the consistency in how these films are titled, some of the new ones are definitely taking ideas from the old ones (e.g. the character of Caesar) and telling a different story, so it’s unclear whether this mass of prequels will eventually bring us to another remake of the original film, or what.
