Product Description

The third and final installment in our initial series on epistemology, supposedly merging and overcoming empiricism and rationalism.

What can we know? Kant says not enough to do metaphysics, at least in the speculative way it was done historically. All we know is the phenomenal world: the world we experience and study through science, not things-in-themselves. However, because the experienced world is the way it is for us because of our own makeup, we can say a lot of definite things about it: our faculty of Sensibility gives us the certainty of space and time, while the Understanding supplies categories like causality, unity, and plurality. While our faculty of Reason would like to go beyond the experience world and posit that, for example, just as things we experience are all caused, the universe as a whole must have a cause, but that kind of thinking is unjustified.

Running Time: 2 hrs, 5 min. Recorded: Apr. 28, 2010. Participants: Mark, Wes, Seth, Azzurra Crispino.

As a bonus, your purchase includes a high-bitrate mp3 of the song that concludes the episode, "Subjectivity" by Mark's college band, The MayTricks.

About The Partially Examined Life

The Partially Examined Life is a philosophy podcast by some guys who were at one point set on doing philosophy for a living but then thought better of it. Each episode, we pick a text and chat about it with some balance between insight and flippancy. You don’t have to know any philosophy, or even to have read the text we’re talking about to (mostly) follow and (hopefully) enjoy the discussion
